Brussels artwork inaugurated in Montreal Metro

09:55 19/05/2017

A work by Brussels artist Adrien Lucca was inaugurated on Thursday in the Montreal Metro, reports Bruzz. The work, Soleil de Minuit (Midnight Sun), symbolises the friendship between the two cities. In exchange, Brussels will later this year receive an artwork from a Montreal artist.

Soleil de Minuit consists of 14 illuminated mosaics of the sun. The artist took his inspiration from the rising sun in Brussels on 21 June, 2015, the longest day of the year. At the same time it was almost midnight in Montreal.

The artwork was inaugurated at the Place d'Armes metro station in the presence of Brussels mobility minister Pascal Smet, Montreal mayor Denis Coderre and the heads of the transport companies in both cities. The art exchange celebrates the Montreal Metro's 50th anniversary and the 40th anniversary of the Brussels metro.

The Brussels-Capital Region financed the work of art, worth about €200,000. This autumn, Brussels' Trône metro station will receive an artwork from a Montréal artist.

The exchange is meant to strengthen the ties between both cities. "Brussels and Montreal have a lot of common," said Smet at the inauguration. "Both are bilingual cities with different communities. In a world of nationalism and individualism, Montreal is a beacon of diversity and solidarity, a city of hope for the future."
