Boy hit by TEC bus at Porte de Hal has died
A seven-year-old Brussels boy who was hit by a bus from Wallonia’s public transport operator TEC has died in the hospital.
Enzo was critically injured when he was hit by a TEC bus near Porte de Hal last Tuesday while crossing the road with his aunt and two cousins.
Due to severe pain and serious injuries, he was kept in an induced coma following the accident and underwent amputations.
According to Ivanice Da Silva of the non-profit organisation Shekina, which was assisting the Brazilian family, Enzo became semi-conscious on Saturday and seemed stable, even showing facial expressions. But his condition then deteriorated rapidly before his death on Tuesday.
“On Monday afternoon, the doctors informed the family that the medication to treat the inflammation of his injuries was not working,” Da Silva told Bruzz. “They then decided to stop the treatment.”
Jean Spinette (PS), mayor of Saint-Gilles where the boy and his family lived, offered condolences.
“We are all deeply moved, the municipality sympathises with the family,” Spinette said.
“Over the past few days, there has been a huge outpouring of support for the family. The tragedy has moved and brought together many people.
"Residents, associations, and also the ambassador and the Brazilian consulate have expressed their support. We all hoped for a happy ending. We remain at the family's side during these difficult times."
According to Da Silva, no public mourning gatherings are currently planned.
Spinette added that the place where Enzo was hit is a complicated intersection, but one with a pedestrian crossing, a cycle path and well-functioning traffic lights.
“Several buses converge there, which sometimes obstruct the view,” Spinette said.
“Discussions were already under way to have the TEC bus line run along a different street. We are waiting to see what the investigation says.”
The Brussels public prosecutor’s office has appointed a traffic expert to investigate the circumstances of the accident.
