Belgium’s richest live in West Flanders
Three -quarters of the 500 wealthiest Belgians reside in Flanders, while the rest are divided equally between Brussels and Wallonia, according to derijkstebelgen.be, a new website that provides daily news and statistics on Belgium’s wealthiest people. Founder Ludwig Verduyn yesterday presented the website to the public for the first time.
According to the website, one-quarter of the 500 richest Belgians live in West Flanders, due in part to the large number of well-off people who own a property at Belgian coastal resort towns such as Knokke, according to Verduyn.
West Flanders is closely trailed by Antwerp province, where 21% of the richest Belgians are domiciled, followed by the provinces of East Flanders (16%), Brussels (13%), Flemish Brabant (8%), Liège (4%), Hainaut (4%), Limburg (3%), Walloon Brabant (3%), Namur (1%) and Luxembourg (1%).
Verduyn calculates total assets based on market prices and publicly available information such as corporate balance sheets and historical figures.
