14:26 01/06/2017

A new price index reveals that Belgium is the most expensive country in the world to buy airline tickets, write various media based on the Flight Price Index created by Czech online travel agency Kiwi.

For the annual survey, Kiwi compared flight prices in 80 countries around the world. It arranged the countries according to the cost per 100 kilometres travelled. In Belgium, flights cost €50.21 per 100km, putting the country in last place.

The most economical tickets can be found in Malaysia, where a 100km flight costs just €3.84 on average. Bulgaria, India and Turkey also sell cheap tickets, as do Sweden (€6.39) and Spain (€6.51).

When it comes to prices that are higher than anywhere else, Belgium is nearly always at the top of the list. Flights are more or less a luxury item but Belgium also 'shines' with higher prices for everyday necessities like food and other supermarket items, pharmaceutical and health care products, internet, auto insurance etc. There is no competitive pricing in this country, just price-fixing.
