Belgium celebrates annual car-free Sunday

11:45 21/09/2015

Cars were banned from many places across Belgium yesterday during the country's tenth annual car-free Sunday event. This year, 33 cities and towns took part in the celebrations, which formed the grande finale for the annual European Mobility Week.

In the centre of Brussels, all roads were closed from 09.30 to 19.00, with only emergency vehicles allowed to enter the city. The traffic-free lanes were taken over by cyclists and pedestrians, who had free reign over the roads. The royal family was among the participants, as King Philippe and his family rode bikes through Brussels.

As in previous years, yesterday's event included numerous activities, such as concerts, picnics and treasure hunts by bicycle.
