Belgian travel industry content with ‘stable summer’

10:24 25/08/2014

The Belgian travel industry is able to look back on a stable summer compared to last year, says Claude Perignon of the Association of Belgian Tour Operators (ABTO) in De Zondag.

In late June, 2014, the Belgian travel market was still facing a deficit of 4% compared to 2013. But sales in July and August have made up for the loss.

"We will more or less break even. The season started out very strong, but good weather in Belgium, the elections and a cautious attitude made more people stay home,” says Perignon. "We can’t complain, though, after June’s losses, sales are now comparable to last year."

According to ABTO, long-haul destinations scored 10% better than last year, and considerably less Belgians took a holiday by car.
