Belgian soldiers’ Harlem Shake goes viral

11:39 05/04/2013

The Ministry of Defence will launch an internal investigation following the release of a video showing Belgian soldiers doing the Harlem Shake in a state of near-undress. The images, which went viral via Facebook and YouTube, show about 20 squaddies wearing risqué underclothes and assorted non-regulation garments. Some of them are dancing with machine guns while others are using a wardrobe as a rowing boat. Het Laatste Nieuws believes the footage was shot at the barracks in Arlon, Luxembourg province. “All I see is soldiers having fun,” says Erwin De Staelen of the liberal union. “Who opposes this? These things existed previously but were not posted on the internet. These men work hard and also need relaxation. The weapons in the video were not loaded and there was no danger.” Defence spokesman Bart Ghys told the paper: “We will analyse the images and calmly assess them without jumping to conclusions.” The video was originally posted on the Belgian Defence ABL website, which is not an army portal.
