Belgian railway looking to reduce ticket fraud
Officials of Belgium’s national railway company, NMBS/SNCB, are planning on installing entry barriers at the Zaventem airport station to help reduce the amount of travelers neglecting to pay the extra Diabolo fee. On 1st February, the Diabolo ticket price will increase from 4.44 euros to 5.07, and the company wants to ensure they take in every penny.
The company says that a percentage - a number not being shared by NMBS/SNCB - of the 3.3 million passengers who took the train from Brussels Airport in 2013 neglected to pay the fee. In order to decrease this percentage of non-paying travelers, passengers will soon be required to use their ticket in order to access the platform through barriers similar to those found at Brussels’ metro stations.
