Belgian post to help combat bike theft

11:32 01/09/2014

The Belgian post company Bpost will launch a new service on September 15 to track stolen bicycles. The service involves CycloSafe, a barely visible computer chip that adheres to the frame of a bike. About 20,000 postal workers across the country will be equipped with a special scanner to detect CycloSafe-chipped bikes that have been reported stolen.

The scanner, built into the worker’s smartphone, automatically sends out an alarm to the police as soon as it comes close to a chipped bike that has been reported stolen. Any attempt to remove the chip could result in permanently damaging the bike.

Cyclists can purchase CycloSafe at the post office, in bike shops or via the website.

In some university towns, like Leuven, you will find more 'abandoned' bikes than stolen ones! Come over and take your pick!
