Belgian Nationality Question

Hi, I am an EU state national, and an interested in moving to Belgium and eventually applying for Belgian Nationality. I was told by a lawyer that in addition to the minimum of five years of residency you need, it takes a couple years to acquire the permanent residency you need. Through research I’ve done on the internet, I have never seen or heard that before. If you’re an EU citizen, doesn’t the five year period start as soon as you have a valid permit or even a temporary residence card?

Please use Google to find out about permanent residency, info is easy to find.

If your paperwork is in order, the declaration procedure is straightforward.

The employees at the gemeentehuis / maison communale make no decision on your application. Make sure paperwork is on order, submit it, write your declaration, wait 4 months.

I did it 2 months ago and it took 5 months. You have to work and pay social security for 5 years. I had a 2 week break between jobs when I didn’t pay social so I had to go for the other option which was 10 years residency.
