belgian nationality
i am thinking of applying for belgian citizenship, i am a non-eu national. i have a resident card of 5 years - been here 2.5 years so far - under cohabitation legale with my long term partner who is an eu national from birth, not belgian. we lived together before this in belgium for 2 years off and on. so my connection with belgium is really already 4.5 years. last year, we had a registered partnership from his country. my questions -
a. can i apply before 3 years of official stay in belgium given my circumstances?
b. how long does paperwork take at the commune and ministry levels? what would be my status in the meantime?
c. do i need to have residence in belgium all through the time for paperwork which i hear may take months, if that is true. we may be out for some years early next year [that is why i was thinking of applying earlier]. can this be handled via a belgian embassy in that country? or do i need an address in belgium for that time?
d. i saw different conditions over the last few years for applying for citizenship. is knowing the local language well necessary?

I applied in February 2011 for Belgian nationality. I got a letter a couple of months after saying they received my application. Since then not a word, not a letter, nothing.
And I have another EU nationality from birth, lived in Belgium non stop for over 12 years, speak the lingo, good job, good everything. Still no answer.
I do not think is going to be that simple especially if you have not lived in Belgium continuously and you are planning to leave the country as well.
You can find extensive information on diplomatie.be, but with only three years aas resident you might have to wait very long time before you get an answer
