Colleges in Belgium offer specialised higher education in a wide range of disciplines
BELGIAN COLLEGES
Centre Européen de Recherches Internationales et Stratégiques (CERIS) is a postgraduate school established in 1985 that provides advanced education for professionals: Brussels-based diplomats, EU or Nato officials, corporate or NGO executives and journalists. Ceris offers a Master in International Politics or in Governance and Development policy (60 ECTS credits). Courses are organised in partnership with the Collège d’Etudes Interdisciplinaires de l’Université Paris Sud 11 and conducted in English by renowned scholars and key experts drawn from leading universities and international organisations. All course materials, including videos of lectures, are accessible online. The programmes are also available entirely online. The deadline for applications is October 31 (October intake) or February 28 (February intake).

The College of Advertising and Design (CAD) is a higher education college of art specialising in advertising, web design and interior architecture and design. It is the only college of art in Belgium and France to provide an English/American-style education. Courses are largely practice-based and taught in French and English by eminent professionals. CAD is attended by some 170 students and employs approximately 60 lecturers. Advertising and Digital Creation & Graphics syllabus: four years (240 ECTS credit points); Interior Architecture and Design syllabus: five years (300 ECTS credit points); 3D Design and Animation syllabus: three years (180 ECTS credit points).

The College of Europe, in Bruges (pictured) and Natolin/Warsaw (Poland), is a unique and innovative postgraduate institute of European studies, combining highly specialised as well as interdisciplinary European studies. Each year, the college admits more than 400 university graduates with a background in law, economics, political and administrative studies or other related fields, representing more than 45 nationalities. The duration of this postgraduate study is one academic year, and it leads to a Master’s degree in European Studies. Working languages are English and French. In Bruges the programme is built around four study programmes: European Economics, European Law, EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies, and European Politics and Administration. The college’s Development Office offers a range of tailor-made seminars and training courses on European Affairs targeted at executives and public sector workers.

Erasmushogeschool Brussels offers an international programme in English called Class (Communication and Languages as Strategic Skills), which includes lectures, tutorials and group work combined with study visits, projects and activities. The international programme contains six key modules in communication, journalism, hotel management, tourism and recreational management, social work and office management. Students who have enjoyed in-depth language training can take extra language modules. Students choose courses in accordance with their own study experience. Familiarity with the topics is a plus, but not a pre-requisite.

The Hogeschool-Universiteit Brussel, as the result of a merger of three Brussels colleges and a university, is a multifaceted institute of higher education. HUBrussel programmes are organised by two educational divisions: professional Bachelor, and academic Bachelor and Master. The professional programmes are geared towards professional practice and aim to prepare students for the independent exercise of a profession. The academic Bachelor and Master programmes are primarily geared towards further studies at Master level and have a solid basis in research. At the same time they have a strong practical and business relevance. All Bachelor programmes consist of 180 European credits and on average take three years of full-time study. All Master programmes, with the exception of commercial engineering, consist of 60 European credits and take one year of full-time study. There are several campuses, the main one being Stormstraat.

Vesalius College is an American-style undergraduate college. The college offers Bachelor and Master degrees in business, communications and international affairs, all taught in English. Its teaching methods are characterised by small, interactive classes, flexibility in course selection and continuous assessment. With an international student body of approximately 300 (50 nationalities) and a low student-teacher ratio, the faculty is accessible and able to take a personal interest in the success of students to help them achieve their potential. Study abroad and internship opportunities are available. Vesalius College is registered with the Flemish government as a higher education institution. Enrolment in August and January with no application deadline. Full-time or part-time.

The Royal Academy of Fine Art of Brussels was founded in 1711 and provides a very high level of education. The Academy builds its reputation by allying tradition and contemporary research.

The University of Maryland offers Bachelor’s of Science and Arts programmes and Master’s programmes in Counselling, Management Information System, Information Technology and Public Administration. Only students holding Nato, Shape or US ID cards can apply.
