The abbey of Villers-la-Ville in Brabant Walloon was one of the locations for the Netflix series Sense8, it has been revealed. Shooting took place in secret, with the abbey unable to reveal details of the project while filming was going on. The series, the second season of which finished in June, is the story of a woman who commits suicide in a church in the US. Her soul becomes mixed with the souls of seven other people from various parts of the world, who go on to share their experience of living together.

The producers of the series were attracted to the abbey – whose ruins often form the backdrop for theatre productions and concerts – when they saw photographs in a magazine. “The actors were surprised at the beauty of the location,” said Christelle Quinet, in charge of events at the abbey. “Everyone was very polite and respectful. And the weather was on our side. It was a fine experience, for the crew, the actors and for the abbey staff.”

The theatrical production Caligula is playing at the abbey from 17 July to 11 August, and the Night of Choirs on 24 & 25 August.
