Battle of Waterloo farm to be memorialised

10:33 07/01/2014

A museum and can’t miss monument welcome visitors to the historic Battle of Waterloo site, home to Napoleon’s defeat and an end to 23 years of war between England and France. But close by, and paid little fan-fare, exists a building that played a significant role in the decisive victory for England and its allies led by the Duke of Wellington.

Left to decay nearly 200 years, a Belgian farm that was central to the famous battle is finally receiving the recognition it deserves. The Hougoumont farm that provided strategic shelter for the British forces is undergoing a €3.6 million restoration, funded by both the British and Belgian governments.

If it wasn’t for the farm, and its surrounding brick fence, Napoleon’s army may have overrun the British-led attack. But, history holds a different story, and soon the public will be able to explore the farm first-hand to find out why.

The work should be completed in advance of the battle’s 200th anniversary in 2015, making the farmhouse a permanent memorial site.
