basil cheese

Question

Hi,

Last December in the Christmas market I bought this cheese called, basil cheese. Looked green and it was very good. I've gone to a couple of cheese stores and they don't have it. Out of curiosity, has anybody tried/seen/bought this basil cheese anywhere in Brussels other than at the Xmas market? thanks!

Interesting. I've never come across a basil cheese. Was it hard, half-hard (think a Belgian abbey cheese), soft like a brie or spreadable? Which market, the one in the centre? If so, perhaps God Save the Cream may know about it. I think they had a stall there.

The only herbed firm cheese I know is the English Sage Derby, which I love melted on jacket potatoes. There'll be some at Arch'en Bières this weekend, come to think of it ;-)

I have seen a firm green cheese in EuroSpar but have never tasted it.

The cheese is hard, kind of like a Gruyere in consistency, but all green.

When we asked the seller why was it green, she said it was b/c of the added basil to it, and thus the name, basil cheese.

I actually looked for this cheese as I had a colleague tell me about it and she's been buying it there for the last 3 years.

The stall last year was across the lobsterfish shop, in that area. You can't miss the stall as is small and the huge green cheese is on display. A bit on the expensive side, but extremely good.

I had a scout around and it wasn't until I tried searching for pesto kaas that I got anything. Plenty of images and this online link (dutch site):

Hope it helps

Nethern bob. Knows his cheeses, I've also had sage derby but that's a very different thing. Sounds like an artisanal item to me
