Bart De Wever comes out on top in Belgian elections

12:06 26/05/2014

The New Flemish Alliance (N-VA), under party leader Bart De Wever (pictured), is the big winner in yesterday’s Belgian elections. The Flemish nationalists maintain their position as the largest party in the country, taking home 33.6% of the votes at the federal level, and 32.9% at the Flemish level.

On the Francophone side, the Social Democrats (PS), under current Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo, make up the largest party, followed closely by the Liberal Reformists (MR). Flemish parties now hold 88 seats in the Belgian parliament, while Francophone parties hold 62 seats.

The biggest loser in the elections is the far-right Vlaams Belang, which surrenders nine seats. Leader Filip Dewinter responded disappointed: “A big part of our voters have disappeared into the black hole of the N-VA.”

Let us hope we will be a lot more sensible this time and take in the lessons of 541 days without a federal government last time. Let us not lose ANY time in negotiating ANYTHING with Bart de Wever : he should be left to rot in the opposition, as he is incapable of entering a coalition, because of the implausible line of his party. Democracy = the majority rules = the biggest party is out if others form the majority - FULL STOP. Bye-bye, Bart !!!
