Bad news for Belgium’s climate

10:47 19/03/2014

By the year 2100 Belgium will face severe flooding, skyrocketing costs due to the rising sea level and serious loss of groundwater resources. These and other startling predictions are in a leaked draft of the latest UN climate report, not due for release until later this month.

Not only Belgium, but also the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Germany, France and Denmark will pay a heavy toll, according to the report. In the EU, the direct costs incurred by the rising sea level could amount to €17 billion per year if no measures are taken now.

The UN climate panel also warns that due to deforestation, Belgium, along with Italy, Spain and Northern France, will experience a significant decrease in the amount of groundwater available.

Never before was the panel of climatologists so explicitly pessimistic, predicting millions of climate refugees, escalating conflict and disruption of the world economy.
