Artist chosen for monument to Brussels attacks victims

After a competition among about 30 artists, the federal government has announced which artist will sculpt a monument to remember the victims of the Brussels terror attacks last March. The chosen project is that of the Schaerbeek artist Jean-Henri Compère.

The monument is planned to be in the European quarter, between the Schuman roundabout and the Parc du Cinquantenaire, and will be unveiled no later than 22 March, to mark the first anniversary of the attacks.

The sculpture will be a series of stainless steel shelves and plates. The work is intended to be abstract with multiple readings - some may see it as a double plane wing or a subway train, according to RTBF.

The artist selected to build the sculpture has a personal connection to the attacks. His father was in the metro train behind the one that exploded and was a witness to the deadly event.

The budget for the project is €100,000.
