Amazon to invest more than €1 billion in Belgium
Global delivery giant Amazon has pledged to invest more than €1 billion into the delivery of its services in Belgium, with extra support for employment, infrastructure development and local partnerships, including collaboration with Belgium’s postal operator Bpost.
In concrete terms, Amazon wants to invest in the customer experience in Belgium, in particular by speeding up deliveries. A same-day delivery system is in the pipeline and should be implemented “soon”, at least in the next few months, said Eva Faict, managing director of Amazon Belgium and the Netherlands.
According to Faict, the collaboration with Bpost - its “main partner” - will continue. “But for same-day deliveries, investments will be needed in the logistics chain,” she added. “Amazon Logistics will not work alone. We are going to diversify… and continue to invest in Belgian talent.”
Amazon currently employs about 400 people in Belgium, a number set to increase given the announced investment.
“In addition to supporting our Belgian customers, we also want to help small and medium-sized businesses that offer their products on the Amazon platform to reach more customers in Belgium and internationally to develop their businesses, while promoting job creation and economic growth,” Faict added, noting this would be achieved partly by investments in artificial intelligence.
"Since the launch of Amazon.com.be in October 2022, we have helped more than 1,000 Belgian companies reach new customers, created hundreds of local jobs, and collaborated with Belgian delivery partners," she concluded.
Since 2015, Amazon has invested more than €800 million in the country. The company now employs more than 400 people in Belgium, spread across its Belgian headquarters in Brussels (including Amazon Web Services), its delivery agency in Antwerp and its mechatronics [mechanical, electrical, computer, and control engineering] research and development centre in Hamme (East Flanders).
The Belgian government was quick to praise Amazon’s new investment. “As a government, we are committed to promoting innovation and supporting companies that create sustainable jobs and economic opportunities," said Flemish minister-president Matthias Diependaele.
"This significant investment demonstrates that our region continues to attract global technology leaders, strengthening our position as a strategic hub for digital commerce in Europe."
Belgium's federal minister for business Éléonore Simonet added: “Amazon’s investment confirms Belgium’s role as a major hub for innovation and digital transformation, boosting our competitiveness, promoting job creation and supporting economic growth.
"This announcement also illustrates the tremendous potential of e-commerce for businesses of all sizes, with particularly promising prospects for Belgian SMEs.”
According to estimates by independent consultancy Keystone Strategy, Amazon’s investments contributed more than €140 million to Belgium’s GDP in 2024, and more than €350 million since 2015.
Last year, the firm accounted for more than 1,000 indirect jobs and 200 induced jobs – i.e. jobs supported by the consumer spending of direct and indirect employment – in sectors such as construction, logistics and professional services.
