I would like to buy some things from Amazon America because they have fantastic prices but they will not export to Europe. Is there anyway around this?
Or can I simply ask a friend to order and pay for the goods and then forward them to me?

Yes!
You will then face customs duties, VAT and possible charges from the Post Office or shipping company for dealing with the customs on your behalf.
