Alcohol consumption on the decline in Belgium
Belgians consume an average of nearly 10 litres of alcohol per person annually, according to a recent study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). That is 16% less than 20 years ago, reports De Zondag
But while Belgians may be drinking less than they were 20 years ago, Belgium’s score is higher than the OECD average by about half a litre. The Estonians drink the most on average, about 12.3 litres, followed by the Austrians and the French.
The OECD study shows that average alcohol consumption has decreased across all 34 member states by about 2.5% between 1992 and 2012. In many industrialised countries, the trend is even more noticeable. In France, Germany, Spain and Italy, for example, people are consuming 20- to 40% less alcohol overall.
