Advice on Moving from US to Belgium

Question

Hi everyone,

I'm moving to Belgium in July to start a masters program. I'm in the process now of apartment hunting and figuring out how to get everything I need. I was wondering if anyone that has gone through this has any advice on what is best to do: bring things from home or have them shipped.

I'm specifically thinking things like sheets, towels, kitchen equipment, etc. I am planning on buying more of my furniture at Ikea once I get there.

Can anyone recommend good stores besides Ikea for home goods? Bedding, kitchen supplies, decorative items, etc. I am going to miss Target! Anything in the Leuven area especially would be helpful. I will have access to a car though, so driving isn't a problem.

If anyone has any general advice too on the move I'd appreciate it! Things you maybe didn't think of at the time but wished you had, or anything to make is simple! I'm on a student budget mostly, so any ways to save money is great too!

Thanks!

Nan

So shipping to Belgium is quite expensive besides the container costs there is the entry customs tax. I would ship minimal. If someone else is paying the bill, then ship as much as you can as it is much cheaper in the states (excluding all electronics except for laptops and lamps (just need to change the plug)). Bed sizes differ here, so don't bring sheets unless you are bringing a bed.

Depends on how you want to do it. It can be less of a hassle if you sell everything before moving and buy new stuff, but then you have to buy new stuff. When we moved, we wanted to bring our car as well as some furniture and personal items. We used this company https://www.a1autotransport.com/ship-car-to-belgium.php (which gives free estimates) and they were able to ship both the car and our personal items in a container. We were also allowed to split the container with another couple so it saved us money!
