act de naissance

Question

Dear expats, I need an advise about Belgian act de naissance. Is it true that an original is kept by a commune and a child get only a copy, copie d'acte? That's what I was told at the commune of Ixelles.

Why would the commune NOT keep the original - either in Belgium or anywhere else in the world?
If the parent/child has the original and it is lost at some time in the future, what then?

Yes. The paper is just an extract from the population registry. Just as it is elsewhere around the world.

The Belgian authorities often require a _recent_ extract, you you may need one that is dated and less than 6 months old.

You can get a certificated copy of this and all other "population" documents from your Commune at any time. At my Commune, they will issue it on the spot and don't make any charge, but other Communes may differ in this respect.
