69 Uber cars seized in Brussels so far

14:22 24/08/2015

Since the beginning of the controls in the Brussels-Capital Region, 69 cars of the illegal taxi service Uber have been confiscated, 48 of which were confiscated this year, according to figures requested by brusselnieuws.be.

In total, 69 vehicles have been seized, according to mobility minister Pascal Smet (SP.A). Drivers can recover a confiscated vehicle by paying a €3,000 deposit and waiting for a period of 15 days.

Checks are carried out in the Region by so-called "mystery shoppers", auditors of the online taxi service pretending to need a ride. Although Uber operates illegally in Brussels, there is no way to increase the number of checks.

Uber is so far only active in Brussels, but, according to De Standaard, the service also recently surfaced in Ghent, although it has since been suspended.

Belgian taxi drivers suck. Any competition is good.

Personally, I would prefer a taxi service where the driver knows the routes, all costs are posted, there is a visible meter, AND THE DRIVER ABIDES BY THE SPEED LIMIT AND LAWS. Overtime I get in a taxi in Brussels, the driver is polite, the car is usually clean, but the driver always exceeds the speed limit, cuts the queue, weaves in and out, and flouts all the rules. That is NOT ACCEPTABLE.
