20 Brussels events in 2020: #3. Bruegel B&W

01:01 01/01/2019

One of a number of exhibitions about Bruegel’s work to celebrate the 450th anniversary of his death, this show is dedicated to his sketches and prints.

The Royal Library of Belgium holds a complete and unparalleled collection of Bruegel’s work on paper and has taken it out of storage for a unique exhibition. Don’t miss this, because once the show is over, these rare and incredibly fragile documents will be returned to the safety of the darkness for probably quite a while.

This is the first time, and it may be the last, that you can peruse Bruegel’s prints closely. In the contemporary world, Bruegel is renowned for his paintings, but in the 16th century it was his graphic work which brought him widespread fame.

The exhibition ‘The World of Bruegel in Black and White’ will draw you deep into his imaginary world. You can admire his landscapes and other sketches but also his preparatory drawings for some of his most famous paintings.

And as an extra benefit, this exhibition is located in the Palace of Charles of Lorraine, a unique 18th century hidden gem in the heart of Brussels. Don’t miss this opportunity to discover Bruegel the graphic artist in a splendid setting.

Until 16 February, KBR
