Video: Topless protest on Flower Carpet against detention of migrant children

21:36 19/08/2018

Two topless activists from the feminist group Femen invaded the Brussels flower carpet on Sunday afternoon to condemn Belgium's detention of migrant children.

The women, wearing just their shoes and knickers, climbed over the security barrier on the Grand-Place at about 15.00 with a megaphone and a message on their chests reading: "This is not a scandal. Locking up children is." On their backs was written: "Shame on Belgium".

Their action comes after news emerged last week that a Serbian family with four young children - all under six - have become the first to be detained in a new closed unit for migrant families in Steenokkerzeel, near Brussels Airport. Hundreds of people had protested against the detention in front of Manneken Pis on Wednesday.

The two women involved in Sunday's protest were apprehended by flower carpet security staff and arrested. They were both released a couple of hours later after police questioning. The case has been sent to the Brussels public prosector's office, which will decide whether to bring charges.
