One in four workers at risk of burnout

12:15 19/04/2013

One in four Belgian workers is at risk of burnout, a survey reveals. The higher the pressure and the emotional stress in the workplace, the more significant the risk is, according to a survey by the IDEWE Group. The survey was conducted among 2,029 workers in Flanders and 842 in Wallonia. More than four in 10 respondents (41%) said they felt emotionally exhausted and 34% complained of a high level of depersonalisation, or a growing sense of distance towards work and colleagues and a constant feeling of cynicism and negativity. The IDEWE group warns companies that absenteeism is not the only important consequence of burnout. “Burnout is also associated with the intention of leaving the company. It is important for employers to be able to quickly recognise the early signs of stress which can lead to burnout,” it says.
