Cyclist issues apology for podium groping incident

11:45 02/04/2013

Slovakian cyclist Peter Sagan has issued a video apology on Facebook after receiving worldwide criticism for groping a podium girl at the end of the Tour of Flanders, reports Cycling Central. The 23-year-old Cannondale rider, who finished second behind Switzerland’s Fabian Cancellara, of the RadioShack-Leopard team, had issued an apology of sorts on Twitter (“just a joke, sorry if someone was disturbed about it”) but that did nothing to stem the criticism, which has been the subject of numerous editorials, catching the attention of publications such as Cosmopolitan and Jezebel. In the video Sagan expresses remorse for his actions, apologising to the woman in question, Maja Leye, with a promise to “act more respectfully in the future”. She tweeted “What happened on Sunday was wrong. I hope this never happens again. But I’m sure it won’t...excuses accepted.”
