CD review: Vive La Fête - "Produit de Belgique"

When guitarist Danny Mommens left the successful rock outfit dEUS to focus on making music with his girlfriend (now wife) Els Pynoo, he took everyone by surprise. But what started 15 years ago as a kitsch novelty act, combining the naïveté of French chanson with 80s electro and new wave beats, has long outgrown its gimmick.

Performing at fashion shows for Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel, travelling the world and now making a seventh long-player in their converted cowshed, they still mix their sheer provincialism and nonchalance with dreams of a cosmopolitan lifestyle. Veteran producer Jo Bogaert made sure he emphasised the live sound of this typical Belgian product, somewhere between the dancefloor and the vegetable garden.
