Belgium-bound diamonds stolen from Mumbai airport

11:41 21/05/2013

Mumbai police have arrested a man suspected of stealing diamonds bound for Belgium worth €552,000 from the city’s Chhatrapati Shivaji international airport. The identity of the suspect hasn’t been made public, pending further investigation. The incident surfaced when a private courier company complained to police that one of the 24 packets of diamonds bound for Belgium had gone missing from the airport. The packet is believed to have been stolen during the loading process on May 16. Police refused to reveal anything about the identity of the suspect, but airport officials claim that nobody except airport staff could have had access to the high-security area. “The theft was clearly a work of an insider,” an airport official alleged.
