Belgian Nobel Prize winner Christian de Duve died on Saturday at the age of 95, reports Le Soir, after choosing to end his life by euthanasia. De Duve was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1974 for his discoveries about lysosomes and peroxisomes. He chose euthanasia a month ago, Le Soir explains in a posthumously published interview. “I’m very close to death; this is the end of the road,” he said. Born in the UK in 1917, de Duve gained his medical degree in 1941, followed by his chemistry degree, and his research has led to significant advances in medicine, particularly in oncology. His daughter said the father of four passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday “in great serenity”.
