Belgian fries declared cultural heritage
Belgian fries were officially added to the Unesco list of cultural treasures, reports VTM today. The Belgian fries are therefore eligible for Unesco World Heritage status.
In addition to fries, there are 11 more Belgian products in the list, including Belgian beer and shrimp fishing on horseback. Official recognition allows products and sectors to generate a lot of money.
Belgium counts about 5,000 fritkots (chip stands) in total. In January 2014, the fritkot was recognised as Flemish cultural heritage. In November of that year, the three language communities of Belgium submitted a joint application for international recognition of the fries culture to the UN organisation Unesco.
