20 Brussels events in 2020: #8. Beautiful Lace and Carine Gilson

01:01 01/01/2019

In the heyday of lace production, Brussels lace was the most prized across Europe and beyond. Brussels’ Fashion and Lace Museum has an outstanding collection which is stored in drawers that visitors can open for viewing, but the bulk of the exhibition space is usually taken up with a fashion exhibition.

The current exhibition combines the two, giving the lace its moment in the spotlight. Carine Gilson is a Belgian lingerie designer with an international clientele including Nicole Kidman, Beyoncé and Monica Bellucci, and her specialty is lace inlay.

In this new exhibition, the Brussels designer reveals what inspires her: the Garden of Eden and Japanese kimonos, as well as Art Nouveau and the works of famous painters. She talks about her encounters and her collaborations with her celebrity performer clients and she describes the creative process for her sophisticated, luxury pieces.

An intimate show in an intimate museum. This is one of the four City of Brussels Museums, so if you live within city limits, entrance is free.

Until 19 April, Fashion and Lace Museum
