Brussels Ring Road’s Leonard tunnel to close to traffic from 8 to 20 May

Brussels Ring Leonard tunnel to close
10:35 01/05/2024

The Leonard intersection – already a traffic hotspot due to major ongoing works – will be completely closed to traffic from 8 to 20 May, reports Bruzz.

Motorists will need to take a detour above ground, which is expected to result in further serious disruption to the beleagured motorway junction.

The busy intersection, linking the Brussels Ring with the E411 Brussels-Luxembourg motorway, has been undergoing major work for months. Several phases have resulted in extensive traffic congestion and the busy crossroads will not be completely reopened before early 2025.

The new phase will focus on the 'supports' between the two tunnels of the crossroads. As a result, no traffic will be able pass through the deeper tunnel of the Brussels Ring Road. The roads and traffic agency has chosen the period of the Ascension and Pentecost public holiday weekends to carry out this extensive work to limit traffic nuisance.

Causing additional disruption to the busy area is ongoing work on the Vierarmen tunnel at the Tervuren junction just two kilometres away.

Meanwhile, the motorway renovations continue to be a source of dispute between the municipality of Auderghem and the Flemish Region over the closure of the E411 exit from Auderghem to Waterloo until the end of October. The Brussels municipality has gone to court to demand a suspension to the closure due to the ensuing traffic chaos. A verdict is expected next month.
